CURL

The University's of Wisconsin's Collaborative Undergraduate Research Laboratory (that's CURL for short) is a gathering of undergraduates, graduate students, and UW faculty engaged in exploring mathematical phenomena of all kinds. Whatever the topic of a specific CURL might be, the focus is always on genuine research questions that are appealing and accessible to undergraduates.
The featured project for Fall 2004 is mathematical biology.
The faculty leaders this semester are Alexander Kiselev, Paul Milewski, Julie Mitchell and Jim Propp, with assistance from John Vano. The graduate intern has not yet been chosen.
You can read the minutes of all the CURL meetings that were held during Fall 2004.
CURL undergraduate participants meet for 4 hours a week, and are expected to invest roughly 6 additional hours per week outside of group meetings. They are paid on an hourly basis. Team-work (and more particularly the sort of brainstorming that occurs when all group-members are present) will play a pivotal role in the success of the research. Consequently, regular attendance will be required.
A course in mathematical biology, Math 491, is being offered in conjunction with CURL during Fall 2004. (It is possible to take Math 491 without participating in the CURL, and vice versa, but many students will find them to be complementary and mutually reinforcing, as Math 491 provides tools that will be helpful to students tackling research problems in the CURL.)

Note: Each member of the CURL maintains their own curl webpage with calculations and a general "journal" of their research. These pages are links under each persons name. In addition to there is a group email allias: curl_f04@math.wisc.edu.
