LDAP and E-Mail Addresses
If your site offers LDAP services, you can use it to
lookup e-mail addresses. This Wiscmail site has complete instructions for configuring several Macintosh and MS Windows e-mail clients to use LDAP for address lookups. You can use their instructions with these Math Dept Specific
modifications:
- Name: UW Math LDAP
- Hostname: ldap1.math.wisc.edu
- Base DN: ou=people,dc=math,dc=wisc,dc=edu
We give complete instructions below for the pine e-mail client:
- Configuring Pine to use LDAP
-
- From the Main Menu in Pine select S (Setup) then D (Directory)
- Type a to add a new directory
- Make sure the the first setting (ldap-server) is highlighted and use Return (Enter key)
- Type ldap1.math.wisc.edu then use Return (Enter key) to save the setting
- Move the cursor down to highlight search-base and use Return (Enter key)
Type ou=people,dc=math,dc=wisc,dc=edu (be sure to type it exactly as it appears on this page) then use Return (Enter key) to save the setting
- Move down two lines to the nickname and use Return. Give your directory entry a suitable name, e.g. "UW Math LDAP" to make it easy to recognize, then use Return to save the setting
To save all the settings type e (Exit) then y (Yes) then e (Exit) to exit the setup screen.
- Using the LDAP Directory to find an address
-
- Type c to start a new message
- With your cursor on the To: line, type CTRL t
- You should see a list of any personal addressbooks you have, followed by the nickname you gave the University directory. Move your cursor to the directory name then use Return
- At the prompt at the bottom of your screen, type in the family name (or partial name) of the person you want to search for, and use Return. Where possible use 4 or more characters as this will make the search more efficient.
- If the search returns just the right person, use Return and the name and address will be added to the recipient list of your email. If the search returns a list of names, scroll down until you highlight the correct name, and then use Return to add that person
- Repeat this procedure until you have added all the required recipients to your message.
