Connecting your Macintosh via Samba

NOTE: In order to use the printers and file system in the Math Department, you must have a valid UW Math Department account.

Security Warning: There is a slight security concern: this setup will save your Math Dept password in plain text on your Mac in the file /etc/cups/printers.conf. This file is mode 0600 so only administrators (or sudoers) can read it, but if your Mac is ever lost, stolen, or compromised, you should change your Math Dept password immediately.

Other Prerequisites: You have to have an account to authenticate to the Math Dept Samba print server. Also, you need a driver file installed on your Mac for each type of printer you want to print to. The Math Dept uses fairly common HP printers so your Mac probably has drivers already installed. The printers on each floor and in 101B are HP 4300s. The printer in B-127 is an HP 4050. All these printers have installed duplexers.

Printing from a Macintosh via Samba Note: The pictures shown below are from a Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) Macintosh. Panther users will have to adjust accordingly.

Connecting your Macintosh to your Unix files via Samba

NOTE File sharing will only work if your Macintosh is connected to the internet via a wired connection in Van Vleck. In the finder, click on the Go menu item, then select connect to server. When the dialog box comes up, type smb://smbhome/homes. This will work if your username/password on your Macintosh is the same as it is on the math server. If it is not, you will have to use this format, where $U and $P are as defined above. smb://$U:$P@smbhome.math.wisc.edu/homes
