Connecting your Windows PC via Samba

Security Warning: There is a slight security concern: this setup will save your Math Dept password on your PC.

Other Prerequisites: You have to have an account to authenticate to the Math Dept Samba print server. Also, you need a driver file installed on your PC for each type of printer you want to print to. The Math Dept uses fairly common HP printers so your PC probably has drivers already installed. The printers on each floor and in 101B are HP 4300s. The printer in B-127 is an HP 4050. All these printers have installed duplexers.

• Click on the Printer Wizard Icon You should see a window like this:

  

• Click next to get the window below:

  

• Choose network printer as shown, then in the window below specify the printer you want. In this example, we have selected the 7th floor printer. Choose another floor number (3..8) or a(101 computer lab), b(B-127), or c(101 TA office).

  

  After you type in this information and click next, you will be prompted for your Math Department username/password After you fill this in, you will see the message below. You may have to wait several minutes until the system verifies that you are a valid user.

  

• After this step, you will be prompted for the printer Manufacturer and Model. Select HP for the manufacturer and laserjet 4050 for the model if you are in 101 or B127. All other users should select laserjet 4300. Save this information (not shown).
• Finally, you should see this window. Click Finish and you will be done!

  

Connecting your PC to your Unix files via Samba

NOTE File sharing will only work if your PC is connected to the internet via a wired connection in Van Vleck. On the Desktop, right-click on the My Computer menu item, then select Map to network drive. When the dialog box comes up, type \\smbhome\yourusername. Where yourusername is your Math Dept username. You will be prompted for your password.
