Using the Canon iR6000 scanner with the PC in 205


General

The Canon Copier should be used with the attached PC. Please use it just to scan documents. For Photos and other graphical files, use the scanners in room 322. The computers attached to those scanners have Adobe Photoshop Elements installed. To use the PC in 205, you must have an account in the Math Department. Login to the PC with your Math Department username/password. Please make sure first that you have selected UW-Math as the domain.

Procedure

Setting up the Copier

Set up the copier for scanning as follows:
  1. login with your PIN
  2. push the scan button on the copier, then select online
  3. Do your scan - see the instructions below
  4. after completing your scan, push the scan button on the copier, then select offline
  5. push the copy button, then log off
    WARNING: Make sure you take the copier offline after your scan. If you don't do this, then next person who uses the machine won't be able to make copies!

Setting up the PC

First time users only:
  1. On the PC, click on
    Start --> Programs --> Network ScanGear --> Scan Gear Tool
  2. Click on the Discover button and wait. Eventually you will see
    iR5000-6000 ... in the Product Box. Click on this name (iR5000 etc.), then click the select button. The Product and Device names should appear at the top of the Scan Tool dialogue box.
  3. Click on the exit button to exit from Scan Gear Tool.
You can use this device with any Twain Compliant application. We have installed only three applications on this PC - MS Office, Acrobat 7 Professional and ABBY Finereader (OCR) software. For most scans a resolution of 200 will be sufficient to make a legible document which won't take up too much space. Instructions for scanning to PDF are below.

Scanning to PDF

Use Adobe Acrobat 7 to scan documents to pdf files. Here is the procedure:

  1. First, lay your sheet on the scanner glass with the printed side down.
  2. Open Acrobat Pro 7 (the icon is in the top left hand corner of your desktop). Select File-->Create PDF-->from scanner:



    You will see a dialog box. Click on the pull down menus and make your selections
    Scanner:Network ScanGear version 2.0
    Scan:front/both
    (note: select front if your document is printed on one side only, both if your document is printed on both sides) Then click on scan.

  3. The sheet feeder will automatically scan in the pages. However, it needs to be told when it is done. When it has run out of pages, you will see get a dialog box asking you to click on either the next page or done. Select done.

  4. After you have scanned the document, choose File-->Save As-->PDF (choose a location you can easily find later). After exiting from Acrobat, use WS_FTP to transfer the PDF file to your account.
  5. Remember to select Scan --> offline on the copier before logging off, so that the person who uses it after you can use it as a copier.
