Using the HP 5550C scanner with the PC

General

The HP Scanjet must be used with the attached PC. To use this PC, you must have an account in the Math Department. Login to the PC with your Math Department username/password. Please make sure first that you have selected UW-Math as the domain.

If you want to use the document feeder, you must load your document with the printed side up and the top edge facing into the loading bay. Make sure that your document is printed on only one side, and that you have inserted the document completely into the loading bay (see picture below)

Scanning to PDF

Use Adobe Acrobat 6 to scan documents to pdf files. Here is the procedure:

  1. First, lay your sheet on the scanner glass with the printed side down.
  2. Open Acrobat Pro 6 (the icon is in the top left hand corner of your desktop). Select File-->Create PDF-->from scanner:

You will see this dialog box. Click on the top pull down menu and select HP Scanjet 5550c The other choices are bogus. They are created when the scanner is unplugged and put into a different USB port. Then click on scan.

  3. The sheet feeder will automatically scan in the pages. However, it needs to be told when it is done. When it has run out of pages, you will see get a dialog box asking you to click on either the next page or done. Select done.

  4. After you have scanned the document, choose File-->Save As-->PDF (choose a location you can easily find later). After exiting from Acrobat, use WS_FTP to transfer the PDF file to your account.
