PRINTING WITH WINDOWS

Samba

To print with a Windows (/00/NT/XP) computer to the Math Department laser printers you need to have an active Math Dept account and be in Van Vleck. Samba does not work over dial-up or DSL connections. Use the Windows print setup Wizard, but instead of browsing for a printer, type

\\printserver1\queue_name
where queue_name is either your floor number (3..8) or a (101b), b(B-127) or c (101). Before you do this, make sure that you have the appropriate printer driver (HP 4050 or HP 4300) installed on your computer. If you want to use the hp4500 color printer, choose hpc as the queue_name.

Got Disconnected?

If you are an authorized Samba user and somehow got disconnected from printing or file services, you can reconnect by following the instructions below.

Printing. First check your network printer settings:

  1. Click Start then Settings then Printers.
  2. Right-click on the icon for your printer(e.g. vv6, or 214, etc.) and select Properties.
  3. Click the Details tab.
  4. In the second box type "\\v720\" and the name of your printer (e.g. \\vv720\6 if you are on the 6th floor).
  5. Click OK.

Now print a test page:

  1. Click Start then Settings then Printers.
  2. Right-click on the icon for your printer(e.g. vv6, or 214, etc.) and select Properties.
  3. Click Print Test Page.

If the procedure above does not work, you will have to delete your printer icon and reinstall the printer:

  1. Click Start then Settings then Printers.
  2. Right-click on the icon for your printer(e.g. vv6, or 214, etc.) and select Delete. DO NOT delete the printer driver, if asked.
  3. Click Add New Printer and follow the steps. Here are the answers to the most crucial questions:
    • Select Network Printer, not Local Printer.
    • When asked for the name of the printer, type "\\vv720\" and the name of your printer (e.g. \\vv720\6 if you are on the 6th floor).
    • For the printer definition, select HP, then HP4050N
  4. Test the printer as in the previous section.

File Sharing.

  1. Right-click on Network Neighborhood and select Map Network Drive.
  2. In the Drive menu select the drive that contains your unix file system (perhaps it's N:).
  3. In the Path field type "\\vv720\username", where username is your unix system username
