Math Department Policy on laptop support established by the COC July 16, 2004 The number of requests for assistance with laptops and home computers has grown to the point where the computer staff cannot accomodate all requests, simply because they do not have time. Their first priority must be to provide support for machines within Van Vleck, including hardware, software, networking, security and user services. Please be advised that support for laptops/home computers is provided at the discretion of the computer staff, and only at their convenience, if time is available. The following are considered outside the scope of their job descriptions: Fixing software and/or hardware on laptops/home computers (DoIT's domain) Preventing and/or eliminating viruses, worms, etc. on laptops/home computers Remote trouble-shooting Managing student laptops that have been purchased by faculty (also DoIT) The computer staff is willing to give advice on the purchase of laptops, and to provide some help with initial set-up. In all cases, it is best to give advance notice and allow plenty of time. Thank you for your cooperation.
