Activities

Students are encouraged to participate in numerous weekly seminars in addition to their regular course work. Through these seminars students learn firsthand of the research of faculty and visitors and have an opportunity to speak on topics important to them and, ultimately, to present the results of their own research. A weekly colloquium featuring outstanding visiting mathematicians is also held by the department. There are other informal interactions between faculty and students including softball, soccer and bridge, as well as twice-weekly coffees and occasional picnics.

Another fun activity is Sidewalk Math Day. During the spring, graduate students set up easels on Van Vleck plaza and informally tutor undergraduates studying for finals.
