Financial Support

Financial Support for Incoming Students

For the coming year the department intends to recruit 20-25 teaching assistants. This support is primarily intended for those in the PhD program and is for five years if one has not been a graduate student elsewhere, otherwise it is for four years. Teaching Assistants receive a salary (currently $11,262-14,100 per academic year), health insurance and remission of all tuition. Although we guarantee at most five years of support, our policy has been to try to continue to support those who in our opinion are likely to complete the Ph.D. program in a timely way.

The department has also access to some outside funds for fellowship support of graduate students. Applicants to the PhD program are automatically considered for all available forms of financial support. Most recently fellowships have been provided from the National Science Foundation VIGRE program (Vertical Integration of Research and Education in the mathematical sciences). Outside fellowships may be for beginning study or for later years.

The department has also some special financial opportunities for female applicants and minority applicants.

Cost of Study

For those not supported by funds from within the university the nonresident tuition is $12,456.24 per semester and resident tuition is $4,821.20 per semester for full time (8 or more credits). Graduate students who enroll for seven or fewer credits pay on a credit basis: $604.40 /cr resident; and $1558.78 /cr non-resident. See Tuition and Fee Schedule for complete details.
