Madison is a city of 200,000
situated between two large lakes in Dane County. The university,
the city and the
surrounding region offer an outstanding intellectual, cultural and
recreational environment. Only a few blocks separate the lakeshore campus
from the State Capitol Square in the heart of the city. Bicycling and
sailing lead a list of popular summer outdoor activities, which also
included swimming and fishing. Cross-country skiing and ice skating take
the lead in winter, and downhill skiing is available nearby. Swimming,
jogging and tennis continue through the winter in the university's indoor
athletic facilities. The Madison Civic Center and the Wisconsin Union
bring music of all kinds, theater, and dance to Madison throughout the
year to complement the many outstanding local groups. Many restaurants,
movie theaters, and a wide spectrum of live entertainment are available
within blocks of campus.
