String Theory and Geometric Engineering of Quantum Field Theories

We motivate string theory as an unifying approach to quantum gravity and review the building blocks of the theory. We then explain how duality symmetries can be used to extract important non perturbative informations about string and field theories, in particular supersymmetric QCD. This application incorporates ideas from soliton physics, geometric engineering, large N duality and certain aspects of the holographic principle.
