Joining the Program
If you would like more information about the program, please contact one of the advisors listed below.
In order to join the AMEP program and become an AMEP major, contact Sharon Paulson (paulson@math.wisc.edu — email link), the AMEP secretary. She will assign you an advisor from the Mathematics Department, who you will contact (by email) to schedule an initial advising appointment. She also has the required forms in order to declare AMEP as your major.
Admission into AMEP usually requires a 3.0 GPA in introductory courses taken in the Mathematics and Physics Departments. After speaking with an advisor, students who are admitted fill out a classification change form to change to the “AMP” designation. This form should be sent or taken to:
L&S Undergraduate Academic Services
Student Academic Affairs
B36 Bascom Hall
If the student is not currently in the College of Letters and Science, after meeting the advisor, they first need to transfer into the college by attending a transfer workshops. Information about transferring into L&S from another school/college on the Madison campus is available here . (At the time of transfer you will be asked to choose between a BA or a BS degree. You should choose BS.)
Advising Information and Outline
Advisors. Each student will have three advisors.
1. A major advisor, who is in the Department of Mathematics.
2. A physics advisor, who is in the Department of Physics.
3. An engineering advisor, who is in the department in which the student specializes.
As soon as you know all your advisors please inform Sharon Paulson. She can make sure that they can keep track of your progress through DARS.
Initial Advising. Each new student will be assigned a major advisor by the AMEP secretary. Also, a folder will be placed on file containing the student’s name, local address, and the name of his or her major advisor. The first meeting between student and the major advisor will cover the following:
1. The overall nature of the program. The student should be given the AMEP Degree
Requirements form.
2. The AMEP advising system, including the desirability of early discussions with the
physics and engineering advisors—even though the student need not officially meet
them until the fourth semester.
3. A list of the names of and contact information for the advisors in Physics Department and
the College of Engineering
After the initial advising and before the fourth semester the student's special interests should be taking shape. The student should feel free to consult with any engineering advisors on possible engineering focuses or course sequences. It is sometimes necessary to begin the engineering science sequence in the third semester. Even though a choice of engineering specialty does not have to be made until during the fourth semester, the student should try to decide on this as soon as possible.
Often, students enter AMEP during their sophomore or junior year. In this case, the advising proceeds as below.
Fourth Semester Advising. This is a key point in the student's program. Before the end of the fourth semester, each student should complete the Course Record Form:
1. Make out a complete program for all eight semesters. This program will, of course, be a
tentative one with respect to semesters five through eight. The form can be downloaded
(see below) or may be obtained from the AMEP Secretary.
2. Secure the signature of the physics advisor on the completed program. This signature
will certify that the student has elected a well-integrated program in physics which
complies with the Physics Department's requirements for students in the program.
3. Secure the signature of the engineering advisor on the completed program. This
signature will certify that the student has elected a well-integrated program in the
particular field of engineering which complies with the Engineering Department's
requirements for students in the program.
4. Secure the signature of the major advisor. This signature will certify that the student has
elected a well-integrated program in mathematics which complies with the Mathematics
Department's requirements for students in the program and to the overall program being
in order.
5. Submit the completed form to the AMEP Secretary. (Keep a copy for your records.)
The approved course program is designed to insure that the needs and interests of the individual student are well met. These interests and needs may change or evolve during the last four semesters. In fact, a student may find ways to improve their program, and is encouraged to do so. As a safeguard against inadvertent errors, these changes must be approved in writing by the appropriate adviser on a copy of the course record form and given to the AMEP Secretary.
Ongoing Advising. The students are encouraged to see their advisors at least once a year.
