Recitations begin on Wednesday, January 12.
- The text book is Advanced Engineering Mathematics
by Zill and Cullen.
- The Syllabus
and Core Problems are posted on the web, so are the old exams and
solutions; see the Math Department
Math 240 page. They are also included in your Maple Computer Manual.
- The exams will generally set at the level of the Core
Problems. The old exams are considered as part of the core problems.
Basic Ground Rules:
- The COURSE GRADE is based on: Final exam (40%), two
midterm exams (40%) and everything else (20%). "Everything else"
includes regular homework, computer homework, the quizzes in recitation,
etc..
- Our weeks will generally start on Tuesdays.
Homework will be assigned the
weekend before, and will be due at the beginning of Thursday's
lecture the following week. You will need to use Maple to do some of
your homework.
- Homeworks will be spot graded and returned in the recitation.
Answers to selected problems will be posted on the web by late Fridays.
- LATE WORK (homework, Maple, etc..) will NEVER
be accepted.
- You can hand in your homeworks early, either in person
or by other arrangement. Never leave your homeworks in any
mail box of the mathematics department.
- Homework will contain instructions for reading.
Make sure you do the reading before the class for which it
is assigned. I will assume you have done so.
- You are responsible for doing all the core problems,
including the old exam problems. They form a constant part of your
home work assignment.
- You are encouraged to work in groups and discuss with
each other. But the work you hand in MUST BE YOUR OWN WRITE-UP.
- Official rules
governing final examinations
- You can use a 5''x7'' note card (both sides) during
the midterm and final exams. Calculators are NOT allowed. Nor are personal
digital assistants. Using any communication device (including
calculators and PDA's) during these exams is a serious breach of academic
integrity.
Grading notes: At the end of the semester, everyone who has
not withdrawn from the class will get a grade. Incompletes will not be
given to avoid F's.
