To earn my tuition and stipend I have to work as a
teaching assistant(TA)
for intro level courses in the mathematics department. The usual
assignment is two two hour discussion sections each semester. Below
I've listed some general guidelines, and below that, specific info for
each teaching assignment. Check the course links below for more info
on the course. See my
schedule for office
hours.
I get a lot of email, much of which is spam. To increase the chances
that I actually see your message, please include the class number
followed by a brief description of the subject of your
message in the subject line.
For example, suppose you are taking math 234 and have a question about
email guidelines. A subject line like
[math 234] Email Guidelines Question
would be good.
Also, please include which discussion section you're in in the body of
your message.
Your homework must be:
I usually hold 3
office hours each week.
Office hours are different from class and discussion: There's
no reason to come if you don't want to. If you do come, you don't
need to arrive at the beginning and stay until the end. You can drop
in any time during the listed hours and leave as soon as your question
is answered.
I'm TAing Calculus III
and running four discussions, namely
| Section | Meeting Time | Location |
| 305 | Tu 9:55am | B123 Van Vleck |
| 306 | Th 9:55am | B123 Van Vleck |
| 311 | Tu 2:25pm | B129 Van Vleck |
| 312 | Th 2:25pm | 6224 Social Science |
See above for generic guidelines. When turning in your homework
treat each chapter section as a different assignment. E.g.,
if you were turning in the Ch 14.2 and 14.3 problems, then you would
turn in two separate labeled and stapled packets: one for
14.2 and one for 14.3. This helps facilitate grading.
If you're in a Tuesday section, then your homework is the first half
of the previous week's assignment, and the second half the assignment
from the week before that. If you're in a Thursday section, then your
homework is the assignment from the previous week. Subject to change
as the course progresses, the chapter sections are
| Week | Dates | Tu HW | Th HW |
| 3 | Sept. 14-18 | Nothing | 14.1 |
| 4 | Sept. 21-25 | 14.1 & 14.2 | 14.2 & 14.3 |
| 5 | Sept. 28-Oct. 2 | 14.3 & 14.4 | 14.4 & 14.5 |
| 6 | Oct. 5-9 | 14.5 & 14.6 | 14.6 |
| 7 | Oct. 12-16 | 14.7 & 14.8 | 14.7,14.8 & 14.10 |
| 8 | Oct. 19-23 | 14.10 & 15.1 | 15.1 & 15.2 |
| 9 | Oct. 20-30 | 15.2 & 15.3 | 15.3 & 15.4 |
| 10 | Nov. 2-6 | 15.4 & 15.5 | 15.5 & 15.6 |
| 11 | Nov. 9-13 | 15.6 & 16.1 | 16.1 |
| 12 | Nov. 16-20 | 16.2 | 16.2 & 16.3 |

| 15 | Dec. 7-11 | 16.6 & 16.7 & 16.8 | 16.7 & 16.8 |
See
Tonghai's
page for the specific problems.
If you're sick then don't come to class, section, or office hours, and
send me an email so I know why you're absent. If you're not already
sick, then avoid risky behavior, e.g.
Took a leave of absence to start an internet company. FAIL.
