Course Info:
Math 211 covers essential concepts of differential and integral calculus; exponential and logarithm functions and functions of several variables. This course (together with Math 210) forms an introduction to calculus and related topics designed primarily for prebusiness students. Notice that Math 210 is not a prerequisite for Math 211.
TextbookCalculus, Ideas and Applications , Himonas and Howard, Wiley. We will follow the book and cover most chapters.
GradingYour Math 211 grade will be distributed according to Shirin Malekpour's course description . As described there, your grade will be based on five quizes (10 pts each), two midterm exams (50 pts each), and a cumulative final (100 pts). In total, you can earn 250 points. The scores will then be curved. The precise curve will not be determined until after the final exam.
HomeworkHomework can be found on the main site here. Solutions to those problems whose material has been covered in class that week must be handed in to your TA Thursdays before quizzes or exams (depending on the week). You should use these assignments not only to practice the concepts, but also to work on your writing---show your steps, justify your answers, and write clearly. It should be neat, clear, legible, and written in complete sentences. Thee skills will be most helpful in improving your overall grade! See my worksheet on Handy Writing Tips for suggestions. If you have any questions about write-up, come speak with me during office hours.
ExamsExams will be given in lecture, while quizzes will be given in discussion every week not coinciding with an exam. There will be two midterms, and one (cumulative) final. No make up quizzes or exams will be given. If you need to miss an exam, please, contact your lecturer or TA.
Technology PolicyCalculators, textbooks and notes are all extremely good tools for learning mathematics. Students are strongly encouraged to use these resources fully in order to learn the material. However, calculators are not allowed on exams for the same reasons that books and notes are not allowed on exams. Students are encouraged to use calculators while studying and doing the homework problems in the same way that textbooks help with studying and doing homework problems. |
