This course does not use a notebook. Instead, we use a set of carefully prepared notes. You will learn to independently read and understand the notes over the course of the semester. Note that the text does not provide answers to the exercises - you will need to learn how to be confident in your answers. You DO NOT need to buy a textbook.

Discussion Grades
Homework
Homework will be assigned in lecture and will be due on Wednesdays. All the homework assigned during a particular week will be due on the following Wednesday. You may hand them in to me at your discussion section or in a folder outside of my office by the end of the day. It will be graded on a 0-20 grading scale: 10 points for completion and 5 points each for 2 problems chosen at random. I will accept no late homework. However, I will drop your lowest homework score.
We will occasionally have web-based homework. More details to follow once I know them.
We will have weekly quizzes, taking place on Wednesdays. Quizzes will consist of 2 problems - 1 directly from the homework and 1 new problem (which will likely be closely related to the homework). The quizzes will cover problems from the previous week, and will be given at the beginning of class. Each quiz will be scored on a 0-20 grading scale. I will drop your lowest quiz score.
Your homework and quiz scores will be added together and converted to a 75 point scale for the discussion portion of your grade.
Exams
- Oct 7
- Nov 17
- Dec 15 (Final Exam)
Calculators are not allowed on exams - you cannot use calculators, cell phones, PDAs, laptops, etc. You may use them on your homework, but it would be beneficial to do it without them, as you will not have access during exams.
I will make a review sheet and/or practice exams before each exams, and will have a review session to go over them and answer any questions you might have.
If you believe a mistake has been made in the grading of your exam, let me know by your next class after receiving it. Give a written explanation as to why you think you deserve more points.
