Monona unfreezing
Friday, April 20 2007
This spring lake Monona unfroze all at once one
Saturday late in March. I was on the way to breakfast
with Sarah when we came across this amazing sight and
sound. I did my best to capture the moment on my
little camera.
The ice pushed its way to
the edges of the lake from the center and broke up
along the edge. The sound was something like a
million wine glasses breaking gently. The ice broke
into thin little shards that scattered about the
still frozen surface.
It was beautiful and
stilled us. Breakfast became lunch.
I also took a short video of the ice. The audio
is a mess, but the sound you hear is not static;
it's the ice.
