but that was a long time ago. Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) is now a larger part of my life than simply a game I play. I play regularly with friends for fun and for exercise alone or with my wife. In fact we chose our most recent apartment mostly because it is on the ground floor and the building is sturdy enough that we can play without bothering our neighbors (I hope). At this point, I think I'm quite good, but not great. Witness:

In fact, this 5 year-old might be a little better than me.

I have also spent some time modding and fixing pads. The picture to the right is me doing just that. I am replacing the foam which separates the conductive layers in my friend's pads. The factory installed foam (white) is flimsy and its breakdown causes the pads to register irregularly. The new foam (green) is sturdier stuff. Having applied the same fix to my own pads, they have remained in good working order since January 2005. Here's a guide I wrote, in case you are interested in making your pads live longer and work better.

pad mod guide

If you have a different kind of pad, there are lots of mods out there. DDR forums are particularly vocal on the subjects of pad construction, maintenance and modification.

I also write about DDR. In particular I'm interested in how people want to use the game in schools for PE. I helped my mom start just such a program at the school where she teaches, and as of September 2006, West Virginia has begun a program to put the game in all their public schools. This is very exciting but I fear doomed unless some curricular obstacles are tackled right out of the gate. I'm writing a paper on this subject, and here is the most current version.
