Advanced Placement Calculus is the alternative course to math 10 and requires either math 9 or AP calculus as a prerequisite. The basic skills needed on entering the class were being able to do derivatives and integrals. Students with these prerequisites felt well prepared for this course.

Respondents praised Professor Jones for his easy-going and informal teaching style which helped them feel comfortable in the class. They noted that he wrote everything on the board, which was good or bad depending on different students? perspectives. Many felt that the class moved too quickly and wished that more time had been allotted for answering questions during class. The instructor was, however, very willing to meet during office hours to answer any questions, sometimes asking students who had longer questions to come see him then. Professor Jones noted that although he was not happy with the textbook, as a graduate student he was not able to change it.

There were no readings for the class, though daily homework problems were assigned from the textbook. Most respondents said that the homework, which was collected once a week, took up a lot of time. Aside from the problem sets, students found that the textbook was not useful at all and regretted spending close to $100 on it. Additionally, there were two quizzes, two midterms, and a final exam. The quizzes and midterms were found to be very difficult.

Between three and eight hours were spent working on the homework outside of class. This was generally a bit more than expected by reviewers. However, they observed that doing the problem sets was crucial for understanding the material, especially since it was so easy to fall behind. Many suggest that if this class is required for you, shopping different sections can help you find the one that suits your learning style the best.
