"Linear Algebra" is a course that serves multiple purposes. First and foremost, it is an introduction to linear algebra - a subject that crops up in virtually every science, as well as economics and computer science. Secondly, the power of mathematical abstraction is demonstrated. In a more logistical sense, Math 52 (or its equivalent 54) is required for almost all 100 level Math classes. Most of the class felt that the official prerequisite of Math 10, 17, or 19 was unnecessary, and that basic algebra and calculus is sufficient.
Rafe Jones, the Grad Student who taught this section did everything right. He was universally applauded for his extraordinary lecture organization and presentation, his sense of humor, his encouraging nature and most of all, his dedication to his students. There was not a single complaint about Rafe. His use of examples and proofs in class enabled students to grasp even the most difficult and theoretical materials. He always encouraged questions and discussions, and often made himself available above and beyond his usual office hours.
Opinions on the text were varied. Some thought that the material was dense, dry and unhelpful, whereas others reported that the text was a vital supplement to lecture, as well as a guide for homework problems. Graded work includes weekly homeworks, two midterms and a final. There were no criticisms of any of these assignments and they were regarded as very appropriate and manageable.
Students reported spending up to eight hours a week on this course. An overwhelming majority of the class recommended this class solely on its versatility and applications to other disciplines. One student noted that this class "made math fun again." If it's a requirement, or if you have a strong interest in the subject or its related fields, this class is a great choice to look into.
