Math 130 - Lecture 2: Arithmetical Problem Solving
(Instructor: Steffen Lempp)
TEXTBOOKS:
HOMEWORK:
Homework will be assigned on Wednesdays at the beginning of lecture and due the
following Wednesday at the beginning of class.
"P/B" refers to Parker/Baldridge: "Elementary Mathematics for Teachers".
"Beckmann" refers to Beckmann: "Activities Manual, Mathematics for Elementary
Teachers".
In P/B, doing a problem "mentally" means that you do it in your
head and don't have to write it or hand it in; in such a case, only hand in
the parts you are explicitly asked to write down.
There will be no credit for late homework except
in case of illness or family emergency.
Please read the problems carefully to understand exactly which
technique is asked for!

EXAMS:
Makeup exams will be scheduled only with the instructor's
consent, and only in case of illness or family emergency.
Calculators are discouraged for any part of this course and will not be allowed
during exams.
- Midterm Exam 1: October 1, 5:30p.m.-6:30p.m.,
B139 Van Vleck Hall
(covers material up to/including section 3.1 in Parker/Baldridge)
- Midterm Exam 2: November 5, 5:30p.m.-6:30p.m., B139
Van Vleck Hall
- Final exam: December 15, 5:05p.m.-7:05p.m., room TBA
ASSESSMENT:
Math 130 is currently being assessed for its ability to better prepare future
elementary school, middle school and special education majors. This assessment
is intended to measure the course, and neither you
nor your instructor. None of the assessment
tests will affect your course grade in any way!
This assessment will consist of three parts:
- an on-line test (to be taken between
September 3 and September 10; the program code will be
given to you in class, or you can email me)
- a written pretest
(to be handed in by September 10) and
- a brief written survey
(to be handed in by September 5)
This assessment is very important to the Department of
Mathematics and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Your partipication is greatly appreciated!
