MATH PLACEMENT TEST
Students who do not have college transfer credits, AP credits, or college credits in mathematics and want to take math classes need to take the math placement test.
Students who took their last math course over a year ago are strongly encouraged to take the math placement exam on an advisory basis, even if they are not required to. Placement based on their past work alone is often inaccurate.
POLICY ON THE MATH PLACEMENT TEST:
A student whose test results place him or her into Math 95 or Math 101
may retake the placement test once without permission. Additional retakes of the test are possible only with written permission from the Math Placement Advisor (or the Math Consultant at SOAR).
A student whose test results place him or her into Math 112 or higher may
retake the placement test only upon written permission from the Math Placement Advisor (or the Math Consultant at SOAR).
STUDENTS WHO PLACE INTO MATH 95 OR 101:
- may retake the test once without permission
- information and schedule are at www.testing.wisc.edu/
- should study before retaking the test
- workshop review sessions over 4 weeks offered by the Math Tutorial Program once a week to help students study for the retest. Retesting is offered after these sessions: www.math.wisc.edu/~tprogram/placement.html.
STUDENTS WHO PLACED INTO MATH 112 OR HIGHER:
- must get authorization from a Math consultant in order to retest
- latest results are the ones that will count even if they are lower than their first scores.
- should study before retaking the test
- in the meantime, students should register for the lower level math course into which they have placed
- review workshops offered by the Math Tutorial Program at the beginning of each semester for math 112 or higher. Information about the workshops can be found at www.math.wisc.edu/~tprogram/workshop.html.
NO EXCEPTION WILL BE MADE CONCERNING PLACEMENT. A STUDENT WHO IS NOT SATISFIED WITH HIS/HER PLACEMENT SCORES SHOULD CONSIDER A RETEST.
