Rankings of Mathematics Programs

Rankings of Mathematics Programs All the information used for these ratings has been derived from a 1994 National Research Council study entitled Research-Doctorate Programs in the United States: Continuity and Change. This is the most recent data available. Copies of the full report may be obtained from the National Academy Press online bookstore or by calling 1-800-624-6242. The tables used in generating these ratings were obtained from Excel 5.0 spreadsheets made available by the National Academy of Sciences.

The Computing Research Association has placed additional background information about the National Research Council study online, including full field descriptions and study methodology. See in particular the caveat about the Median Years to Degree variable.

Criterion Description
Score Program ratings. The score for each program is a sum of points received for each criterion. For a criterion with importance I, a program receives I S points for being better than average by S standard deviations.
FacQualScholarly quality of program faculty, 1993. Scale of 0 to 5, with 0 denoting "not sufficient for doctoral education" and 5 denoting "Distinguished".
EdEffProgram effectiveness in educating research scholars and scientists, 1993. Scale of 0 to 5, with 0 denoting "Not Effective" and 5 denoting "Extremely Effective".
NumPhDsThe number of Ph.D.s produced by the program for the period academic year 1987-1988 to 1991-1992.

Green Green cells indicate programs that are one standard deviation or more better than average.
Red Red cells indicate programs that are one standard deviation or more worse than average.
