Abstract:
We first give an outline of the operator algebraic approach to conformal field theory. We emphasize its relation to the approach based on vertex operator algebras. We present operator algebraic classfications of chiral/full conformal field theories with central charge less than 1, and construct the operator algebraic counterpart of the moonshine vertex operator algebra, whose gauge group is the Monster group. We also list various related open problems.
