Experience

I have TAed all three courses in Wisconsin's calculus sequence (numbered 221, 222, 234), some of them several times. I am currently involved in teaching courses for preservice teachers (numbered 130, 131, 132). If you are looking for the course website for something I taught previously, please use this link.

Philosophy

I believe strongly that everyone can learn mathematics and engage fully with difficult mathematical ideas. In my courses I expect that every student will learn to engage with the material and discuss it with both me and their classmates. Therefore, as a general rule, I avoid teaching memorization of procedures in my courses. I believe algorithms for college math are difficult to memorize and easily forgotten after tests. Instead, I try to focus on problem solving, written and oral communication of mathematics, and conceptual understanding.

I've been part of two different experimental programs designed to achieve these goals, and I really like thinking about and discussing ways to make college math courses more conceptual. If you are also interested in this, stop by or send me an email!

I spend a lot of time being a TA and I am continually trying to improve. If you have any feedback about my current course or a course I taught recently, don't hesitate to get in touch with me about it. For current students, please do it before evaluations! I don't get to see your evaluation until after the course is over, so if you want something changed you have to get in touch with me more directly. I recommend email.
