The Fifth Annual Midwest Number Theory Conference for Graduate Students will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison on November 3-4, 2007. This conference is an opportunity for number theory graduate students working in the Midwest to meet in a friendly environment. Participants are encouraged to give talks on their ongoing or completed research projects. All areas of number theory are welcome.
Please register for the conference using this page.
See here for Jeremy Rouse's helpful advice on how to give a good talk.
Madison is in south-central Wisconsin, and is situated along highways I-39, I-90 and I-94. It is about 79 miles west of Milwaukee, 148 miles northwest of Chicago, and 270 miles southeast of Minneapolis. Northwest, United, American and Continental Airlines service Madison's Dane County Regional Airport. In addition, Madison is served by Greyhound. Also, Badger Coaches offers service from the Milwaukee airport to Madison and Van Galder Bus Company offers service from Chicago's O'Hare airport to Madison.
For taxis we recommend Badger Cab which is substantially cheaper than other local cab companies. Their phone number is (608) 356-5566.We have reserved a block of hotel rooms for November 2-3 at the University Inn. The University Inn is conveniently located on State Street, about ten minutes walk from the math department and in the immediate vicinity of many restaurants, coffee shops, etc. The conference rate is $89.00 for one person, or $99.00 for two people, per night. Please make reservations individually at 608-257-4881, and tell them you are with the Midwest Number Theory Graduate Student Conference.
We request that graduate students funded by us share a room. Please contact us if you need help finding a roommate.
Also, please book your hotel room by October 9 (the rooms are subject to being released afterwards).
For information on dining, see FoodSpot.com, an extensive Wisconsin restaurant guide. My personal advice would be to walk down the hill from the math department, straight towards the Capitol... and you will walk by about 500 good places to eat.
We will have funding available for full or partial reimbursement of participants' travel and lodging expenses, up to a maximum of $350. Requests for funding beyond this will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
To receive support you will need to obtain and submit receipts for everything. International visitors MUST BRING (to the conference) their visa, passport, I-94 form, I-20 (for F1 visa holders), and permanent resident card (if applicable). Please contact Vicky Whelan (whelan@math.wisc.edu) with any questions.
Please bring photocopies of everything in advance (if possible).
The Midwest Number Theory Conference for Graduate Students is being organized by Jordan Ellenberg, Guillermo Mantilla-Soler, Ekin Ozman, Frank Thorne, and Christelle Vincent. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at mntcg5 [at] math.wisc.edu.
