How to speak Matlab

If you have successfully started Matlab on any machine, type "demo" then try out the many nice demos. This is one of the best ways to learn Matlab. Remember it!

Check out the CAE Matlab handout at the CAE site or the local copy .

The following 8 pdf files contain information about how to get started with Matlab. These were written by Prof. Paul Rabinowitz, UW-Madison for Math 319. Clicking on anyone of the links below should automatically start Adobe Acrobat (be patient, sometimes it takes a little while to start Acrobat), from which you can print the file if you wish.

These files will be updated during this Spring 2000 semester.

  1. Getting started with matlab
  2. Intro to "dfield" (external M-file)
  3. Introduction to "M" files (i.e. how to program in matlab)
  4. Solving N-th order linear, constant coefficient ODEs with a bit of help from Matlab
  5. Tools for systems of ODEs
  6. Matlab for matrices and vectors (what Matlab was originally designed for).
  7. Intro to "pplane" (external M-file)
  8. Approximations to differential eigenvalue problems
