Admission to AMEP is internal to UW Madison, you must be admitted to UW Madison or already be a UW Madison student to join AMEP.
Admission into AMEP as a freshman requires placement into Math 222 at least, although placement into Math 234 (4 or 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam) is preferred. Admission into AMEP as a sophomore or junior requires a 2.75 GPA in introductory core courses taken in the Mathematics and Physics Departments.
Although AMEP has a substantial engineering component, it is at present a Letters and Science degree -- The Bachelor of Science in AMEP. Non-L&S students must transfer into Letters and Science.
Students should declare AMEP as soon as possible. The first step in declaring the AMEP degree is to visit an AMEP Math Faculty advisor.
Students fill out an AMEP degree Declaration form (PDF) to change to the “AMP” designation and meet with an AMEP Math faculty advisor (listed below) who needs to approve and sign the declaration form.
Look for AMEP faculty advisors' office hours in the MATH ADVISING CALENDAR or on the Professor's webpage (linked to below). When you contact a Professor make sure to put "AMEP" in the subject line and send brief clear messages since they receive lots of emails having to do with teaching and research activities, at UW and elsewhere.
Each student will have three faculty advisors.
- An AMEP degree advisor, who is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics.
- A physics advisor, who is a Professor in the Department of Physics.
- An engineering advisor, who is a Professor in the department in which the student chooses to focus.

The first meeting between student and the major advisor will cover the following:
- The overall nature of the program and a review of the AMEP Degree Requirements form.
- The AMEP advising system, including the desirability of early discussions with the physics and engineering advisors although the student need not officially meet them until the fourth semester.
- A list of the names of and contact information for the advisors in the Physics Department and the College of Engineering
After the initial advising and before the fourth semester the student's special interests should be taking shape. The student should feel free to consult with any engineering advisor on possible engineering concentrations or course sequences. It is sometimes necessary to begin the engineering science sequence in the third semester. Even though a choice of engineering specialty does not have to be made until the fourth semester, the student should try to decide on this as early as possible.Often, students enter AMEP during their sophomore or junior year. In this case, the advising proceeds as below.
Fourth Semester Advising. This is a key point in the student's program. Before the end of the fourth semester, each student should complete the Course Record Form:
- Make out a complete program for all eight semesters. This program will, of course, be a tentative one with respect to semesters five through eight. The form can be downloaded(see below) or may be obtained from the Math Department Undergraduate Coordinator.
- Secure the signature of the physics advisor on the physics part of the program. This signature will certify that the student has elected a well-integrated program in physics which complies with the Physics Department's requirements for students in the program.
- Secure the signature of the engineering advisor on the engineering part of the program. This signature will certify that the student has elected a well-integrated program in the particular field of engineering which complies with the Engineering Department's requirements for students in the program.
- Secure the signature of the major advisor. This signature will certify that the student has elected a well-integrated program in mathematics which complies with the Mathematics Department's requirements for students in the program and to the overall program being in order.
- Submit the completed form to the Math Department. (Keep a copy for your records.) The approved course program is designed to insure that the needs and interests of the individual student are well met. These interests and needs may change or evolve during the last four semesters. In fact, a student may find ways to improve their program, and is encouraged to do so. As a safeguard against inadvertent errors, these changes must be approved in writing by the appropriate advisor on a copy of the course record form and given to the Math Department Undergraduate Coordinator.
Your advisers are listed on your course record form. They will be added to your record by the undergraduate coordinator. That will ensure the advisers can keep track of your progress through DARS.Ongoing Advising. Students are encouraged to meet with their advisors at least once a year. If you wish to pursue an engineering concentration in either Biomedical Engineering (BME) or Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE), consult with your Mathematics Department advisor on which College of Engineering faculty member to contact.
- AMEP degree Declaration form (PDF) fill legibly and have it signed by an AMEP Math advisor (listed above). A hardcopy of the Degree Declaration form can also be obtained in the undergraduate office in Van Vleck Hall (Math Dept building, Van Vleck).
- If you are not an L&S student, you must also transfer into Letters and Science
- Spring 2015 phase out of: The AMEP Course Approval (or "course records" or "course plan") form should be filled together with your Math, Physics and Engineering advisors. You can download it here: AMEP Course Record Form (PDF) or obtain a hardcopy at the Math undergraduate office in Van Vleck Hall. Do not fill out the form on your own, the form should be completed with your AMEP faculty advisors since they need to approve your plan of study in each of the 3 areas: Mathematics, Physics and Engineering! NOTE: AMEP was coded into DARS in Spring 2015 making the course record form obsolete. Please check out your DARS for AMEP.
