Alumnus Ben Kane Honored with prestigious Young Scholar Award

Ben Kane (Ph.D., 2007, Advisor: Tonghai Yang) has won the prestigious Hong Kong Mathematic Society Young Scholar Award.   He is cited for his fundamental contributions to number theory, especially on the theory of meromorphic modular forms and polar harmonic modular forms. As two of many beautiful applications of his joint work with Kathrin Bringmann, the authors proved a Ramanujan type formula for the Fourier coefficients of any meromorphic modular form of negative weight, and gave an explicit construction of meromorphic modular forms of weight 0 as sums of polar harmonic forms. Ben is at Hong Kong University.  Ben was one of three young mathematicians cited, along with Eric Chung of Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Xianpeng Hu of City University of Hong Kong.

A Stunning Year for Melanie Matchett Wood

Melanie Matchett Wood has had a simply phenomenal year.

She's received the Vilas Early Career Investigator Award by the Provost, and was awarded the AWM-Microsoft Research Prize in Algebra and Number Theory by the Association for Women in Mathematics in May 2017.

The Early Career Investigator Award recognizes research and teaching excellence in faculty who are relatively early in their careers, while the AWM-Microsoft Research Prize in Algebra and Number Theory serves to highlight to the community outstanding contributions by women in the field.

She went from Assistant Professor, to Associate Professor to Full Professor in just the last few months.

And in January, she won an NSF Career Award.

We have grown accustomed to Melanie’s abundance of awards, but so many celebrations of her excellence is truly special! Congratulations Melanie!! You Rock!
