Boston and Seppalianen Awarded as Simons Fellows

Nigel Boston and Timo Seppalianen have been named Simons Fellows for 2015-16.

The fellowship covers half of a sabbatical year, the complete list can be found at

The Fellows Programs provide funds to faculty for up to a semester long research leave from classroom teaching and administrative obligations. Such leaves can increase creativity and provide intellectual stimulation. The goal of the Simons Fellows Program is to make it easier to take such leaves, or to extend sabbatical leaves by an extra half year.

Ellenberg Awarded John D. MacArthur Chair

Jordan Ellenberg has been awarded the John D. MacArthur Chair by the Chancellor and Provost offices. This is considered to be one of the most prestigious endowed Chairs on campus, with only a few of them given each year. It is a great honor, not only for Jordan, but also for our Department. We are all very proud of Jordan and fortunate to have him in Madison.

Timo Seppalainen Honored with Mid-Career Award

Timo Seppalainen has been awarded a Vilas Faculty Mid-Career Investigator Award.

The Vilas Mid-Career Investigator award is a campus-wide award that recognizes exceptional scholarly accomplishments. It is funded by the William F. Vilas Trust Estate.

David Sondak Featured by Wisconsin Engineer

David Sondak was the featured professor in the March 2015 Wisconsin Engineer magazine, produced by UW Engineering students.  The article hails his ability to engage with students in his classes, stating "lecture is enough to become ensnared in his contagious passion for math and its relationship with the world."

Melanie Matchett Wood Awarded Sloan Fellowship

Melanie Wood has been awarded a Sloan Fellowship for 2015.  The Sloan Research Fellowships seek to stimulate fundamental research by early-career scientists and scholars of outstanding promise.  These two-year fellowships are awarded yearly to 126 researchers in recognition of distinguished performance and a unique potential to make substantial contributions to their field.
