Mathematics Major Declaration Events

There are two ways to declare the Mathematics major: a one-on-one meeting with a Mathematics major advisor or by attending a group advising session and completing an online form.

One-on-one Advising Meeting

To schedule a meeting with a Mathematics major advisor, you can use Starfish.

Group Advising Session

New for Fall 2026, the Mathematics major is offering group advising sessions for students to declare the Mathematics major. This will be a 30-minute Zoom meeting in which the Director and Associate Director of Undergraduate Studies will discuss the requirements of the Mathematics major, including its six named options, along with some important things for you to consider. Advance registration for this Zoom meeting is required, and students must attend for the entire meeting in order to qualify to declare based on attending the group advising session. Students who attend a group advising session will be given a link to a form to complete their declaration. The form must be completed by the last day of classes of the semester in which they attended the session.

Fall 2026 Dates

We currently have two sessions scheduled. If you miss both of these or neither fits your schedule, you can still schedule a one-on-one declaration meeting or check back for additional dates. It is likely a third session will be added in November.

One-on-one or Group?

You are a good candidate for the group advising session if you satisfy all of the following:

  • You have run a what-if DARS for the Mathematics major (or a named option) and DARS shows that you are eligible for admission to the major.
  • You feel confident that after a description of the standard Mathematics major and its named options, you will be comfortable selecting the path you wish to initially declare.
  • You do not currently have questions about course selection.

You should pursue a one-on-one advising appointment to declare the Mathematics major if any of the following describes you:

  • You have questions about the differences between the standard Mathematics major and its named options that you wish to discuss with an advisor.
  • You have questions about course selection.
  • You plan to pursue Honors in the Major for Mathematics.
  • Your home school/college is the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.
    • CALS requires a special form to declare an L&S major. Please meet with Dr Keller.
    • Students in other schools/colleges are welcome to attend a group advising session or make a one-on-one appointment.
  • You plan to pursue the Math for Secondary Education named option.
    • This program has several courses that are offered less frequently. Developing a semester-by-semester plan for completing major requirements is important.
