VISP and Master’s Scholarship
The VISP and Master’s Scholarship is designed to provide financial support to exceptional students pursuing their second year of study in the masters programs in the Department of Mathematics.
The scholarship is merit-based. The scholarship is $5000 per award. The number of awards is typically about 10% of the total population of first-year(or first semester if start in spring) VISP students plus the first-year(or first semester if start in spring) direct admit (non-VISP) MA students. The scholarship will be used to reduce the tuition for the second/final year of the master’s programs.
Who is considered for this award:
• First-year(or first semester if start in spring) VISP students and first-year(or first semester if start in spring) direct-admit master students in good academic standing with a minimum of 3.0 GPA;
Selection Process:
• The VISP-MA committee identifies the top 20% of eligible students based on GPA in the first year/semester of either the VISP program or the MA-FAS program in late May;
• The Program coordinator notify initially selected students and ask if they would like to suggest a faculty member for a brief letter of support;
• The Program Coordinator sends letter requests based on student responses (or committee suggestions if there isn’t one)
• The VISP-MA committee decides on the recipients in summer.

Jiarui Li
My name is Jiarui Li. I’ll be starting my second year as a master’s student in math at UW-Madison. I graduated from Nanjing University. My favorite research area is algebraic geometry and differential geometry. My first year in Madison was life changing and fulfilling. I am extremely grateful to all the professors who have taught me and all the classmates who have given me a lot of encouragement and support in the last year. I am very honored to be awarded the VISP/MA scholarship and I will continue working hard in the future.
Ruiming Diao
My name is Ruiming Diao and I am a second-year student of the VISP-MA program. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Shandong University. I am interested in biostatistics and computational biology because they have great real-world impact. In my first year in Madison, I sincerely appreciate the invaluable help that I received from the instructors. In particular, I would like to express my gratitude to Professor Rycroft. He told me “Every instructor wants your success” during our first meeting, which encouraged me every time I hesitated about requesting help from a professor. I am honored to be awarded the VISP-MA scholarship.

Mingxu Jiang
My name is Mingxu Jiang. I’m a VISP student in math at UW-Madison. I graduated from the Southern University of Science and Technology. I’m interested in number theory. I am grateful to all the professors who have taught me, especially Prof. Tonghai Yang, who taught me a lot. Hi my name is Vincent Caputo and I will be starting my second year in the master’s program at UW in the fall. Before coming to Madison I completed a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Rutgers University. My mathematical interests include algebra and number theory as well as probability and stochastic processes. This fall I hope to continue my mathematical education by applying for math PhD programs.

My name is Ning Yi and I graduate from Southern University of Science and Technology. I am interested in numerical methods of PDEs. Thanks for all professors who taught me last year, especially Prof. Ohm and Prof. Rycroft, who gives me a lot of guidance. I will work hard in the future.

I am Shuguang Yao and I will start my second year as a master’s student in Mathematics at UW Madison. Apoorva
I’m Apoorva and I’ll be starting my second year as a master’s student in Mathematics at UW Madison in Fall 2023. I am from Jaipur, India and I enjoy poetry and conversations. Before coming to Madison, I graduated from IIT Roorkee with a major in Chemical Engineering and then worked as a quant researcher. My first year in Madison was wonderful. I learned a lot and got interested in Representation Theory and Topology. The lectures and assignments were always insightful and fun. I am extremely grateful to all my professors for their help and support, and for believing in me. And I am looking forward to doing more math.
Shinuo Ma
I’m Shinuo Ma from the VISP-MA program. I am interested in combinatorial optimization and extremal graph theory. Before coming to Madison, I spent three unforgettable years in the top-notch class of School of Mathematical Sciences, East China Normal University. During my first year at Madison, I enjoyed the mathematical study here and I want to express the greatest gratitude to Prof. Alberto Del Pia, Prof. Chenxi Wu, Prof. Jean-Luc Thiffeault for their mentoring and all professors who have taught me. I also sincerely appreciate Prof. Shaoming Guo, Prof. Tonghai Yang and Xin Cui-Dowling for their help with my study plan. I’m Tianlong Huang (Chinese: 黄天隆), a graduate from Zhejiang University with honors in B.A. Mathematics, specializing in Statistics and Probability. I’m deeply grateful to Professor Betsy and Hanbaek for their crucial endorsement regarding the award. Hello! My name is Yanbo Chen. It’s my pleasure to spend two years here in Madison. I would remember all the professors who helped me a lot in and out of classes. I can hardly be as intelligent as them but would do my best to explore the wild world of mathematics and help others. Furthermore, I really love to walk home solitarily on a snowy night. Keru Zhou
My name is Keru Zhou. I will start my second year as a master’s student in 2023 Fall. I graduated from Central South University and I am interested in combinatorics. Rongsong (Ron) Yang
My name is Rongsong(Ron) Yang, and I am currently a second-year master’s student in Mathematics at UW-Madison. I began with a major in computer science during the first three years of my college. Inspired by the Polymath REU in the summer after my junior year, I became interested in math and took math courses during my senior year and finally I decided to switch to mathematics! I am interested in Algebra and Geometry/Topology! In my spare time, I like to cook. I am so grateful to my family, all the professors, and friends for their encouragement and support! Haochen Cheng
My name is Haochen Cheng, and I will be a second-year student in the VISP-MA program this fall. My favorite research area is number theory and arithmetic geometry. Before beginning this program, I studied math in Beijing Normal University and earned a bachelor’s degree this year. All my teachers and friends in Madison gave a lot of support to me and I really appreciate it. I am extremely grateful to Prof. Tonghai Yang, Prof. Dima Arinkin, Prof. Ananth Shankar and Prof. Autumn Kent for helping and instructing me on the courses and other materials. Ruocheng Yang
My name is Ruocheng Yang, and I am from the VISP-MA Program of the Department of Mathematics. I completed my meaningful undergraduate studies at the School of Mathematical Sciences, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. My favorite research area is complex algebraic geometry and Hodge theory, in this regard I would like to thank my advisor Prof. Botong for his guidance and Prof. Tonghai for some advice. Of course, I am also very grateful to the other teachers and students of the VISP-MA Program. In the first year, I took some courses of algebra, geometry, and number theory. Thank you teachers for their wonderful teaching, I have learned a lot, especially when I took part in office hours, I really thank the teachers. I am also working tirelessly to become a qualified mathematician, and I will be full of energy and forge ahead!

Tingting Fang
I am Tingting Fang, a second-year student from the 2020-2022 VISP-MA program. My favorite research area is algebraic geometry. In my leisure time, I enjoy watching videos and reading Buddhist books. Before joining this program, I came to Madison as a visiting student from Nanjing University for one semester. I am so touched by the pleasant atmosphere where communications and discussions are extremely welcome, so I decided to join the VISP-MA program. All of my teachers, relatives, classmates and friends give a lot of support to me and I really appreciate it.
Jiaxiang Ji
My name is Jiaxiang Ji, a second-year student in the VISP-MA program. In this year of study, I gain a lot of knowledge and the program helps me a lot. I took 5 courses in the first year due to the COVID-19. Teachers are very patient in answering questions and their courses are also very interesting. I would like to thank Professor Ananth Shankar, Professor Alexei Poltoratski and Professor Sigurd B Angenent who helped me in my courses. Also I would like to thank my advisor Professor Nan Chen, who gave me many suggestions on course selection and future planning. Michael Lloyd
My name is Michael Lloyd, and I’m currently a graduate student in Mathematics in the MA-FAS program at UW-Madison. I am from Cincinnati, Ohio and I am an enormous Reds/Bengals fan! Before beginning my Master’s degree, I studied Mechanical Engineering at Ohio State during my undergrad and completed several engineering internships. My favorite branches of math include Algebra, Number Theory, and Topology. In my spare time – I enjoy board and video games, puzzles, movies, and church involvement. I am extremely grateful to my family and friends for all their support over the years, and I am very honored to have been chosen as one of the awardees for the MA-FAS scholarship!
Cheng Chen
I am a second year Master student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Currently my research interests lie in Geometry and Mathematical Physics, and more are waiting to be explored. I did my undergraduate work at Nankai University, graduating with a B.A. in Physics. In my spare time, I read philosophy and classics, which, along with mathematics, contribute to our understanding towards the marvelous universe.
